Avram Fefer.Eric Revis.Chad Taylor

Avram, Chad, and Eric after a sold-out performance in Lithuania, June 2011.

Avram Fefer Trio
Eliyahu
(NotTwo 2011)
The outstanding follow-up to Ritual, again features the powerful trio of Fefer, Revis, and Taylor---this time devouring nine groove-based originals. Fiery, lyrical, and trance-inducing, Eliyahu brings New York to Africa or Africa to downtown Manhattan , depending how you hear it. Tribal groove as context, with improvisation as age-old fable. Dedicated to Avram's late father, Dr. Alexander Fefer.

Avram Fefer Trio
Ritual
(Clean Feed 2009)
Fefer is reunited with his longstanding trio-mates, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Chad Taylor, whom he first met in the mid-1990s. The music is very open and free sounding, combining compositional strength and the free flow of ideas between musicians, producing pieces that are interconnected and set on a common mission. Stark, yet exciting music that has been shorn of all finery and left with the core essence that lies at the heart of the best improvised music.

Bobby Few/ Avram Fefer Quartet
Sanctuary
(CIMP 2006)
Avram's first recording in the classic jazz quartet format of saxophone and rhythm section (Hilliard Greene and Newman Baker on bass and drums respectively). This CD includes elements that might conjure up images of the 'Blue Note' era------the blues, gospel, and latin music are heard as influences---but the overall sound also reflects Fefer's long and varied experience in the avant-garde, embracing both swing and abstraction as sources of musical intensity.

Avram Fefer / Bobby Few Duo
Kindred Spirits
(Boxholder 2005)
Recorded in the summer of 2004 near Paris, this recording presents the lyrical side of the duo, presenting classics by Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus and Duke Ellington as well as a couple of originals. Avram and Bobby both share a love of the melodic, the soulful, and the romantic as demonstrated in their relaxed approach to the material on this CD.

Avram Fefer / Bobby Few Duo
Heavenly Places
(Boxholder 2005))
This CD combines the tail end of the Kindred Spirits recording session with part of a live set from a festival in Belgium recorded just days before. The duo is heard letting loose in a spontaneous burst of improvisation at the end of the recording day--- a moment of authentic musical liberation. The festival performance which follows brings the power of their musical empathy to a live concert setting (and 100 degree temperatures).

Avram Fefer Quartet
Shades of the Muse
(CIMP 2003)
This recording features a number of interesting compositions. Utilizing cello (Tomas Ulrich) as his melodic/ harmonic foil and incorporating the lesser known sounds of his own clarinet and bass clarinet playing, Fefer takes a more spacious approach, emphasizing the woodiness of the band's instrumentation. Ken Filiano and Jay Rosen, on bass and drums respectively, round out this ensemble of strong, sensitive, and dynamic musical personalities.

Avram Fefer Trio
Calling All Spirits
(Cadence 2001)
Fefer's debut disc as a leader presents his trio with drummer Igal Foni and bassist Eric Revis. Including original compositions as well as pieces by Mingus, Cherry, and Coleman, this disc presents a typical evening's repetoire for the band and demonstrates Fefer's love and understanding of the vast sax-bass-drums tradition. This recording was especially well-received by critics and listeners and remains what Fefer calls "a defining musical moment for me----documentation of a real working band and the culmination of a decade of repertoire development and sound exploration."

Connections
(CIMP 2005)
Mike and Avram team up with Jay Rosen on drums and Steve Gauci on tenor as they play some beautiful compositions by the leader. Displaying wonderful group interaction, musical shape and development, this CD also features a sound event thought to be without precedent in recording history....(Hint: it happens on Basic Deconstruction)
