BOBBY FEW
Unlike many of my peers who moved directly to New York City to begin their jazz lives, I chose a less obvious, but perhaps more poetic, path —- beginning my career as an expatriate living first in Barcelona and then in Paris.
In Paris, I ended up playing with a number of incredible musicians from the states. One of the best and most long-lasting of these musical associations was with legendary pianist Bobby Few, who was renowned for his work with Booker Ervin, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Frank Wright, Albert Ayler, and Steve Lacy.
Despite our difference in ages and backgrounds, Bobby and I share a love of both classic jazz and free improvisation. We recorded and toured as a duo, trio, and quartet, performing everything from jazz standards to original compositions, to completely free improvisations. Our album Kindred Spirits (2005) received international acclaim and our performance at the FMP Festival in Antwerp, Belgium (2003) was documented on a tandem release, entitled Heavenly Places (2005).
We recorded a live trio album with the late great bassist Wilber Morris (brother of Butch), and a quartet disc with drummer Newman Baker and bassist Hilliard Green.
After performances in Paris with piano legend, Bobby Few, and acclaimed director, Melvin Van Peebles. Played duo and quartet with Mr. Few. Played tenor and acted a small role in the theatrical production of Mr. Van Peebles Sweet Sweetback’s Badaaassss Song.
